District makes priorities clear:
Administrators over Teachers
In
their ongoing attempt to balance the 2008-2009 budget, the district
proposed on Monday the creation of up to 28 Assistant Principals
positions and in exchange, eliminating 69 school positions, including
K-8 Career Specialists and Trust Counselors, as well as some Guidance
Counselors in elementary schools. The total savings to the district’s
budget: $0.
“This is reprehensible,” UTD President Karen Aronowitz said. “This
administration has made it clear that they care more about their
administrators than they do teachers. This will have a direct impact on
students that are the most vulnerable.”
The
action will not only lead to decreased direct services to students, but
it will lead to increased layoffs.
The
recommendation will be up for vote as agenda item SP2 at the First
Budget Public Hearing scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, at 6:00 p.m.
