Sharon Auer

Vice President Elementary Schools

The issues of Adult Education have been ignored for far too long.  We are about to change that.  We have designed plans to actually reform the working conditions for part-time adult education employees.  Our caucus, the Original Spotlight Caucus, is the only caucus running a part-time adult education employee for the Executive Board.  This will give part-time adult education employees a voice in our union.

We are the only slate who is running an Temporary Teacher as a candidate for the Executive Board.  Our Candidate for First-Vice President, Marta Laura Zayas, while working for UTD, lobbied for and established an Organizer that provides direct support and services to Temporary Teachers.

Dillon Bethel
Vice President Elementary Schools

I am a product of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system from my first day at Norwood Elementary School to the last day at Miami Norland Senior High School.  I’m in my eighth year of teaching Physical Education at Sunset Elementary and my third year as Building Steward.  I became a teacher to make a difference for the kids.  But more than that, I became a Steward to make a difference for the faculty.

I am a young energetic educator who is concerned about the state of our union.  My observation of what takes place behind the scenes is unacceptable.  Our profession needs to be held in high regard and I believe that our current system of management does not serve our needs effectively to ensure this respect.  I can make a difference.  Together with The Original Spotlight Caucus,  I can return our profession to what was once, and will be again, a proud and respected profession.

Accomplishments:

·         1999-2000 Sunset Elementary Rookie Teacher of the Year

·         2002-2003 Runner – Up Dade County Physical Education Association Elementary Veteran Teacher of the Year

·         2005-2006 Physical Education Teacher – Madie Ives Summer Demonstration School Project

·         2004-Present Building Steward Sunset Elementary

My name is Cassandra Holmes; I am a proud wife and mother of two beautiful children.  I am also a teacher with Miami Dade County Public Schools and a proud union member.  I am one of the candidates running for the office of Elementary School Vice President.

I have been a union member for 11 years and an alternate steward for 8 years!  I keep up with union news and business through meetings, the internet, newsletter, rallies, trainings and discussions with other members.  Even though I am an alternate steward and have never held the position of designated steward, I have been nominated as well as selected for Steward of the Year for Region IV numerous times!

Since I have 8 years of experience our union laws, regulations, duties and rights!  I believe that I will be able o represent the Elementary Level in several ways. I can relate to your frustration with non union members having some of the benefits we have because of the bargaining unit and I am willing to come up with ideas which will make non members have some type of fee for our services.  There are many other suggestions that I would love to tea up with other Elementary teachers (union members) to share and put in to action.

Finally, I promote the Union!  In other words, I am UNION BOUND!
I LOVE MY UNION!

My name is Debra McEathron.  I am a teacher with Miami Dade County Public Schools and a proud union member.  I am one of the candidates running for the office of Elementary School Vice President.

I have a Master’s degree in Elementary Science and I am a National Board Certified teacher in Early Childhood education.  I keep up with Union news and business in a variety of ways through meetings, the internet, newsletters, and discussions with other union members.

I promote the Union among my coworkers and colleagues in as many ways as possible.  These include discussions about concerns happening within the union such as discounts available, the NCLB Act, merit pay, our step increases and our raises, etc.  I will be proud to represent the Elementary schools as a vice president.

       VOTE FOR

  MAGGIE J. PALMER

 VICE PRESIDENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

I have actively participated in the following accomplishments on your behalf:

v      Acquired five hours of uninterrupted planning time weekly for elementary school teachers, as a member of the Contract Negotiation Team. This is a landmark decision.

v      Fought to defeat a proposal from the District that required a mandated, formal Open House before the first day of school utilizing time set aside for preparation activities by instructional staff.  This was accomplished as a member of the Bargaining Team and Co-Chairperson of the Parental Involvement Committee.

v      Extended the E.R. & D. training sessions to enable more paraprofessionals the opportunity to meet NCLB guidelines. I was one of the members of the Executive Board who discussed this with UTD Management and AFT.

v      Participated in the “40K NOW” workshop, which discussed different techniques to boost teachers’ salaries.  Later, on the Bargaining Team applied these concepts to get a 3-year contract, which guarantees a 40K starting salary for new teachers by the 2008-2009 school term.

Allow me to continue to be your Voice in Our Union…

I am poised, prepared, and experienced to represent and serve you.

ELECT THE ONE QUALIFIED TO REPRESENT YOU!

Dear Members, my name is Albert Stellmach, and I’m running for Vice President for Elementary schools.  I have worked hard since the Tornillo years to help rebuild our union.

I started a UTD Fine Arts group this year and we have had some success with new contract language, an opinion editorial in the Miami Herald, and an article in the NEA Today.   We put out a survey and will use that survey to place pressure on our school board, and superintendent and legislators.

During the “Teaching Credits” scandal, I wrote an editorial that made the school board stop and think about who the real victims were.   My effort helped place pressure on the school board, and they shortly stopped with the firings.

Back in 2003, I started a Bariatric surgery group, and was able after two years to have the weight surgery re-instated for our health care.

Additionally, I was on the original UTD paperwork reduction committee, and we helped with the formation of the computerized version of the Academic Improvement Plan.

I know our issues, and currently work at Perrine Elementary as a magnet music teacher.  I want to continue to fight against the hard right agendas in Tallahassee and we need higher pay, and more respect for our profession.

If you elect me I will continue to fight for our rights and help change things that are right for education.

Remember if you don’t vote…..then the wrong people get elected.

Vote for me.
