Teachers Address School Board as “The Face of UTD” "I am a proud member of the United Teachers of Dade!!”

”I am a proud member of the United Teachers of Dade!!”

Passionate, dedicated teachers shouted out loud and clear at the School Board Meeting on Wednesday.

Their passion for teaching is only surpassed by the pride they take in their work. They introduced the School Board Members to the face of UTD: responsible for molding the future leaders, preparing them for challenges in the workplace and allowing them to believe they can excel at all they do.

Excited with the new school year, these born-to-be educators lectured the members with the same passion and enthusiasm they bring to their students everyday.

“A public educator is the one public escalator,” said Coral Gables Senior High UTD Steward Daniel Blackman, a history teacher for 30 years.  “For me, the least stressful time is when I close my door and I’m with my students in the classroom.”

 UTD member Deborah Martinez

“I decided it was time to follow my dreams and go into teaching,” said UTD member Deborah Martinez, a former legal secretary that left an unfulfilling job and has been teaching ESE students for 4 years at South Hialeah.

UTD President Karen Aronowitz proudly introduced the teachers, including them among notable union leaders and members such as Albert Einstein, Pulitzer Prize winning author Frank McCourt and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Elie Wiesel.

Aronowitz also addressed other issues, including the importance of civic education and what it brings to our students. “When we teachers are teaching civics, we also serve as the models for our students by our participation in civic life as voters, and as members of United Teachers of Dade,” she said.

On the issue of D-3, Aronowitz stated that the STAR program makes 75% of the teachers ineligible for consideration for the bonus money and essentially, “removes money from the salary pot for raising teachers’ salaries.”
