Florida Memorial College has a new Urban Minority Teacher Education Program (UMTE)

This program prepares minority paraprofessionals to become certified teachers in the critical shortage area of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) K-12, and equips them to teach in urban schools.  The UMTE Program is a partnership between Florida Memorial College, the Broward County Public Schools, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Broward Community College, Miami-Dade Community College, and the South Florida Annenberg Challenge.

The UMTE Program Seeks Paraprofessionals who:

  • Have an Associate Degree (in Education preferred) or have completed 60 college credits in appropriate or related academic areas with a 2.5 GPA;
  • Are interested in an ESE major;
  • Are currently employed by either the Broward or Miami-Dade County Public Schools; and
  • Are committed to teaching a minimum of three (3) years in an urban school district upon completion of the degree (Broward or Miami-Dade).

What does the UMTE Program offer?

  • Financial aid for all selected students.
  • Classes conveniently scheduled on evenings and weekends.
  • Counseling, tutoring, mentoring and personal support from committed and caring faculty.
  • A curriculum designed to prepare teachers to work effectively with ESE students and families in urban schools.
